Structure
Check panel gaps, door alignment, and any sign of frame or rail damage in the photos.
Mechanicals
Look for fluid leaks, damaged belts and hoses, and a cracked radiator or condenser.
Safety systems
Confirm whether airbags are intact or deployed and whether the dash was opened.
Flood signs
Search for waterlines, silt, rust on bare metal, and a musty or bleached interior.
Documentation
Verify the title brand, odometer status, and whether keys are present.
What you can assess from photos versus what needs in-person inspection

- Can I do a useful inspection using only auction photos?
- Yes — a careful photo review rules out most deal-breakers. Panel gaps, airbag covers, interior condition, and paint consistency are all visible from photos. They cannot replace a lift inspection, but they catch the most serious flags before you spend money traveling to a yard.
- What is the single most important area to inspect?
- Panel gaps. Symmetrical, consistent gaps across the entire car suggest the structure is intact. A pinched or widened gap on one side, especially near a pillar or door, strongly indicates structural movement regardless of how clean the panels look from a distance.
- Does a run-and-drive label mean I can skip part of the checklist?
- No. Run-and-drive confirms only that the car moved under its own power on the lot. It says nothing about structural integrity, airbag status, alignment, or what fails on the road. Run your full checklist on every vehicle regardless of that label.
- When is an in-person inspection worth the cost?
