Of all the lines a buyer can read on a salvage listing, airbag deployment is the one that most reliably separates a light project from a heavy one. The bags themselves are only the visible tip of the repair. - The dashboard or instrument panel itself when the passenger bag tears through it, plus surrounding trim
- The windshield, which passenger-bag deployment can crack, and which many designs use as a backstop for the bag
Notice how many of those items are single-use by design. Pretensioners and bags are pyrotechnics: once fired, they are scrap, with no repair option. That is why deployment costs are so inelastic. You cannot hammer out an airbag the way you can a fender.

How to spot deployment in auction photos
Listings do not always say airbags deployed, and secondary damage fields miss it regularly. The photos usually tell you anyway, if you look at the right places at full zoom.
- Deflated bags hanging from the steering wheel or dash, the obvious case
- A steering-wheel center pad or dash panel that is split open along its seams
- Bags cut away or stuffed back in, leaving torn covers or visible fabric edges
- A cracked windshield with an interior impact pattern on the passenger side
- Powder residue on the seats, dash, or headliner
- Limp or twisted seatbelts that no longer retract, hinting at fired pretensioners
- An illuminated airbag light in any photo taken with the ignition on
Be suspicious of interiors that look too tidy for the exterior damage. A hard frontal hit with a spotless, intact dash can mean the bags were already replaced, which raises its own questions, or that covers were reinstalled to hide a deployment. Cross-check the seatbelts and the windshield, because those are harder to stage than a snapped-on cover.

When deployment is a walk-away
Deployment is not an automatic no. Plenty of profitable rebuilds start with fired bags, priced correctly. It becomes a walk-away when the deployment stacks with other expensive signals, because each one compounds the same underlying fact: the hit was hard.
- Deployment plus structural clues such as pinched panel gaps or a shifted rail, since the combined repair rarely pencils out
- Multiple bags fired, including curtains, which usually drags in the headliner, pillars, and seats
- Dash destroyed on a model where interior parts are scarce or back-ordered
- Evidence of a previous cheap fix, like covers glued shut or a suppressed warning light, which tells you the seller cut corners you cannot see
- A repaired value too low to absorb thousands in restraint work and still leave margin
There is also a line you should never cross regardless of economics: a restraint system patched with junkyard modules of unknown history, resistors to fool the warning light, or bags simply left out is not a repair, it is a hazard.
