The layers of damage to evaluate

Cosmetic

Bumpers, panels, glass, trim. Cheap individually, but they add up fast once paint and blend time are included.

Structural

Frame rails, unibody, pillars, and core support. This is where cars become uneconomical to repair.

Mechanical

Engine, transmission, suspension, steering, and cooling. Often untouched in photos, often the real story.

Safety systems

Airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and sensors. Deployment means thousands in parts plus calibration.

Electrical

Harnesses, modules, and connectors damaged in a hit or by water. Intermittent and expensive to chase.

Water and flood

Corrosion and mold that may not appear for months. The most underestimated category of all.

How to build your own damage assessment

  1. Start with the labels

    Record primary and secondary damage, then treat them as the minimum, not the maximum.

  2. Inspect the evidence

    Zoom every photo. Look for crash creases, overspray, mismatched panels, and airbag covers.

  3. Map the likely hidden damage

    A front hit usually means radiator, condenser, and possibly the subframe. Predict the chain.

  4. Price it before you bid

    Estimate parts, paint, labor, and calibration, add contingency, then set your ceiling.

What is the difference between primary and secondary damage on a Copart or IAA listing?
Primary damage is the main reported impact area — the zone that typically caused the total loss declaration. Secondary damage is any additional reported damage elsewhere on the car. Both fields are written quickly from a yard inspection and rarely capture everything. Treat them as the floor of what you will find, not the ceiling.
How do Copart and IAA damage descriptions differ?
Copart uses primary and secondary damage fields paired with a highlights section for run-and-drive status and keys. IAA adds a loss-type field that classifies whether the event was a collision, flood, theft recovery, vandalism, or another cause. The IAA loss type is often the single most useful field for setting your hidden-damage contingency because it tells you the category of risk, not just the location.
Can I tell if a car has structural damage from the damage description alone?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Damage labels such as 'Front End' or 'All Over' can imply structural involvement, and secondary damage mentioning suspension or airbag deployment is a strong indicator. But structural damage is routinely absent from listings entirely. Panel-gap inconsistencies and rail distortion visible in photos are more reliable signals than any text field.
What does run-and-drive actually mean in a damage context?
It means the car started and moved on the lot under its own power at the time of listing. It says nothing about structural soundness, alignment, airbag status, or what fails once the car is on the road. Treat it as one useful data point alongside the damage description and photos, not as a clean bill of health.
